significantly among manufacturers, according to the pigment source and the
exact details of manufacture and purification (oven temp, etc.). “French”
ultramarine is, I think, called that because the details of its manufacture are
a little closer to the first industrial method developed in <st1:country-region
w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">France</st1:place></st1:country-region>, but I
can’t remember where I read that. For any given manufacturer, the
usual difference is, as stated by Daniel Smith:<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

10.0pt;font-family:Arial'>I find that I switch off between FUB and UB without
conscious purpose, but use only W&N, Daniel Smith, or M.Graham. I
advise not worrying about the name so much as whether you like the paint and whether
it suits your purposes. Exact hue under standard laboratory conditions is not
really that important, since it is relative hue in your painting that dominates
the effect. It is good to pick one that has a high saturation, pleasing
granulation, and nice working qualities.<o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

I notice that there are paints labelled both French UB and just UB. Is there
any real difference?<br>

I checked Handpring, and it appears that all are PB 29. I also notice DS sells
under both names- and it's PB 29. As is often the case, I am confused. Can
anyone shed light on this? Why are both names used?<br>
