<DIV>In my youth I wanted to paint outdoors (artists didn't use the term 'plein
air' then, they said things like 'landscapes from life' or 'paint
outdoors'). However, I found when I go outside I am having so much fun
being there I never can get focused on the painting part; I also seem to attract
bugs, if there are any, my most memorable one being a bumblebee who rolled
around my oil palette until he was liberally covered, and then managed to get on
everyone else's car or jacket. Or there's wind. I still have a
collapsible easel with adjustable legs -- and it still collapses or arranges to
have it's legs change sizes better than it does anything else, although I admit
it is light and easy to set up. </DIV>

<DIV>When you live in the tropics, you have the extra trouble in that if you
have forgotten the tide schedule, you can be busily painting away, feel some
moisture at your feet, and know for a certainty that you are too late to get
your vehicle out of harm's way. So, I went back to being a studio painter,
although I love to go along with landscape artists and watch 'em, or snap
photos.</DIV>
