Miriam has the experience and excellent advice for the situation. I would
only add that you should have a lawyer who specializes in intellectual
rights to review any contracts.

Claudia,
Although thsi very well could be a scam, I have been approached many times
by local would be authors.
My approach is always they may be trying to be professional but I am already
a professional therefore any work I do needs to be paid upfront. I have a
contract that stipulates the price per jpeg (digital file) they will receive
for my work and that I still am entitled to benefit from proceeds via the
publisher should their concept be picked up by a major publisher. I retain
copyright to my work and they get limited copyright permission to use the
jpeg. I also keep my original art as theyt are only paying for a scan. In
fact, if this is for presentation purposes for them to send to potential
publishers then the jpeg need not be large nor high resolution.
Moreover, remember that even if a publisher should like their idea, the
publisher may insist on the project going forward with their own in-house
publisher!
So my advice is not to do anything based on speculation and get paid what
you are worth. you can easily google prices for illustrative work to see
what cover illustrations cost!
good luck.

Hi Claudia,
I was also asked to illustrate a book with watercolours from France (I have
some scenes from France on my website since I lived there for over 5 years).
And he was also a writer with no publisher but his idea was that with my
watercolours and his ability to write about the region, we were sure to make
money out of this. My biggest problem was that this was done over the
internet and he contacted me by emailing me this offer from my website. It
didn't sound genuine to me and definitely smelled like a scam. He wanted me
to send over my watercolours to him so he could publish a few copies to
approach some publishers. When I suggested that he send me the text and
that I would look it over before doing anything about it ... I didn't hear
anymore from him. When it sounds to good to be true ... it unfortunately
often is !!!

Hello , I have been asked to illustrate a childrens book
I did one before but with a good friend and started the projekt for fun and
without any thought about
earning lots of money. So my friend and I decided that I get a amount of
money per sold book . at the End we sold about 300 Books , the cost of the
print was carried by the writer. And so at the end we just got back what we
invested on money,
Now I was asked by a lady who lives in china to illustrate a book, but as I
understand she hasn't got a publisher yet but wants to send it in with
pictures. How should I handle this situation, since I am not a professional
artist I don't know anything about it.
Does any of you have some information for me on this situation.
Swiss greetings
Claudia Arztmann
