[Aquanet] Critique comment

I appreciate all the feedback. Thank you!

I definitely agree that I need to pay more attention to values and shadows.
I think that the dog appears to be competing because I really could have gone much darker with the girl's hair----and then subsequently I would have had to increase the values in the shadow on the face. I am also bother that the feet do not have shadows therefore do not appear to be grounded. This is very helpful to me and hopefully I will be able to generalize your feedback for my current and future portraits.

Subject: [Aquanet] Critique comment

Hi Miriam and all,
this is my first time to submit a critique and I have not been brave enough to submit a painting for one yet, but here goes! My official unprofessional thoughts. At first glance, I also felt that the dog's head was a bit too dark but then my eyes kept going back and forth from girl to dog and then my eyes went down the dog and out the girl's leg to the bare feet and bit of hand brings you back up to the girl's face. Ok, I am relatively new at this, so you all may say, of course, it does! There is a lot going on in the background but it is subtle so it doesn't take you away from the girl or dog. It is as if you have 2 center of interests and that can be ok, isn't it? But the girl is clearly the focal point. Her features are lovely. My only comment would be to perhaps increase the values on her neck area a bit, both the parts in shadow and in light but I am not sure it really needs that. I can clearly see that the lightest area is flashing on her neck and
chest area. You mentioned you were hoping to increase the boldness in contrasts and that might be something. It is a wonderful painting and I am sure the client is pleased to have it.
