Hi Miriam and all,
this is my first time to submit a critique and I have not been brave enough to submit a painting for one yet, but here goes! My official unprofessional thoughts. At first glance, I also felt that the dog's head was a bit too dark but then my eyes kept going back and forth from girl to dog and then my eyes went down the dog and out the girl's leg to the bare feet and bit of hand brings you back up to the girl's face. Ok, I am relatively new at this, so you all may say, of course, it does! There is a lot going on in the background but it is subtle so it doesn't take you away from the girl or dog. It is as if you have 2 center of interests and that can be ok, isn't it? But the girl is clearly the focal point. Her features are lovely. My only comment would be to perhaps increase the values on her neck area a bit, both the parts in shadow and in light but I am not sure it really needs that. I can clearly see that the lightest area is flashing on her neck and
chest area. You mentioned you were hoping to increase the boldness in contrasts and that might be something. It is a wonderful painting and I am sure the client is pleased to have it.
