Glad of Nita's warning about Daniel Smith's Rose madder. I use permanent
Rose of Windsor Newton. I stick to the one brand so as not to confuse
them. An orphaned color , for which I have a dozen tubes, is Payne's
Gray. Mario Cooper demanded it and then Carleton Plummer said "Get that
Payne's Gray out of your palette!" He was right though it makes a lovely
green with lemon yellow..
My favorite color is blue so I use a lot of Cobalt (Windsor Newton) ,as
it is the most neutral, to make lavenders and purples. Jean Dobie drew
my attention to the reason. Ultra Marine and Thalos and Cerulean are warm
and gray the reds. I do a lot of skies in my local landscapes. The
river scenes are long and narrow and I want to fit them in a standard
size frame, so I.have a lot of sky. Charlie Sovak taught us to start at
top with warm and light on side where sunlight starts and grade to
ultramarine on opposite. As you move down toward horizon grade from more
intense color to very pale thalo or cerulean at. Both Edgar Whitney and
John Pike started with washes of pale yellow and or red at horizon. Pike
called those washes "Early Pearly". Unfortunately Pike died as I was
about to begin his classes. My local teacher, Dick Ohs, former President
of NEWS, www.norteastws.com, was a student of Pike for years and passed
on a great deal of his wonderful techniques.. His photo and bio on
opening page of NEWS web site.
