Hi Lorraine,

I have been teaching for three years now and enjoy it immensely.

I charge $20 for a two hour class and can have up to 8 students at a time, I
will be raising this to $25 a class next year.

I used to teach smaller groups at my studio but found I ran out of space.
More importantly it was effecting my own work as I had to make compromises
with my set up to allow for the students. I now teach at our local art
society where I am allowed to use their space for free. All my students have
to become society members so that is what the society gets from the deal.

In the beginning I taught on Wednesdays and Saturdays but then changed to
Friday and Saturday classes only. This worked better for me as I found I
could better focus on either teaching or my own painting by breaking the
week up into two separate blocks.

I have a personal rule I try to abide by with all my students and that is
that they should go away from every class having learnt something new, this
keeps them interested and also makes me feel like I am delivering a good
product.

Teaching has been a great boon to my own work as I am sure other teachers
will agree with but I will leave that for another thread.

I hope this is of some help.

Regards

Joe

Subject: [Aquanet] info on classes

Hi gang,

I need some information from all you art teachers out there. I was approach
many times to give watercolour lessons in my area. I have already given
some drawing and watercolour lessons but it was always to people I know
(read: no charge!!!). I have always hesitated about doing this at large but
I am thinking of starting in the Fall. Now for the hard part, how much can
I charge for the different type of lessons?

Private lessons: only one student in my studio (supplies not included in the
cost). I was thinking of giving either 2 or 3 hours (what do you think is
best?) lesson for a total of 10 lessons (20 or 30 hours). What would be the
average rate for this?

Semi-private lessons: three or four students in my studio (supplies not
included in the cost). I was thinking of giving either 2 or 3 hours lesson
for a total of 10 lessons (20 or 30 hours). What would be the average rate
for this?

Group classes: 10 to 15 students. These classes could be in schools as an
after school activity, for the city or in retirement centers. For the
retirement centers, I was thinking of 2 hours maximum per lesson. The
supplies would be furnished by the center (I would give them a list). I
wouldn't charge the students but the center would be offering this activity
to their residents. So I need to now what is the normal price per hour that
teachers charge for these types of classes.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to respond to this e-mail.

Have a nice day!
