One of a long series of egg and shell studies in transparent watercolor. My
watercolor instructor many
years ago had the class paint egg shells as an introduction to the media. I
soon realized what a valuable
lesson it was and have my beginners paint eggs and shells to this day.
Gwendolyn C. Bragg
I love this one because not only is a close up, Gwendolyn has wonderfully
and successfully
handled this subject matter. She knows about warm bouncing light from
underneath,
and cool light overhead. This occurs in sunlight with blue sky above. This
study would benefit us all, were we to do it!
Look at the gorgeous colors she has incorporated into the shapes, red,
yellow and
blue, and she has made these eggs really glow!!! She expresses the
direction of light
without fail. It's hard to do that too.
She has handled complex shapes, the two eggs that are unbroken seem to be a
mama and papa, in the
way we mean in composition, guarding the broken ones. She's truly expressed
difficult
shapes and contours, i.e. convex and concave shapes, inside them and outside
them.
She has let us feel the delicacy of the shells. They say to me that once I
was unbroken,
I was exactly the size, hardness, and color to warm and keep a tiny chick
embryo safe.
Just look, look at the beautiful reflected color in the shadows, the crevice
darks, which
so many don't see. This painting is a miracle.
So Gwendolyn, your painting most embodies what "Close Up" means to me.
Put it in a show!
