[Aquanet] June Theme

Thanks, Linda, I have been experimenting with mixed watermedia & collage for about a year & I'm hearing 'I like what you used to do better" quite frequently.   It is discouraging, but after 20 years painting watercolors, it is exciting to try something new & creative.  Your advice is music to my ears.  Cheers, June

For as long as I can remember family, friends and customers have said to me "I liked what you were doing before this better".
I believe that if an artist is to continue to develop their creativity it is essential that they explore new ideas, take risks and push past the limits if their current work. It does not matter that others don’t understand or like it – they just haven’t caught up to the new ideas. Patience and persistence is required as others often need time to consider the unique vision that an artist may present. Please tell your friend that the non-confidence vote is, in fact, high praise.
Look at it this way, new artistic ideas are simply two or three steps ahead of everyone else and by the time they get "it", let’s hope that we will be even further along. Of course then one can expect to hear the mantra "I liked what you were doing before this better" once again.

happy painting,
Linda

Hello Everyone,

All of the entries for the June Theme are terrific.  I am busily working away on mine.  A close-up is something I would never have chosen to do on my own but I am loving the challenge.  That is what I like so much about these monthly themes.  They push one to try something that otherwise wouldn't get done.  It's fun!

I had an interesting discussion with a friend who is an award winning photographer.  His work is beautiful!  Recently, he started playing around with photoshop, manipulating his photos in various ways.  His wife, and some of the buyers of his work are not loving his new approach and he asked for my opinion about experimentation versus tried and true work.  Well, I haven't really sold enough work to have a client base that might not like my new work but when I do try different techniques, friends and relatives are quick to state their opinions.  Still, the need to be creative and experiment is there and needs to be fulfilled.

I advised him to play and enjoy being excited by the new possibilities.  He could do that and still take the photographs that have been his mainstay.  He seemed relieved to be given permission to have fun!

Have any of you dealt with the dilemma of doing work that you know will sell versus throwing caution to the winds and venturing out of that safe zone?

I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences on this issue.

Regards,

Judy Silver
