I have not used Lana or Whatman, but I do use W&M, d'Arches and Saunders
Waterford, all in 140# cold press. I find the latter two to be quite
similar; that is they are tough papers that take quite a bit of scrubbing.
I find the W&N to be whiter and softer. It was in using the W&N that I
stopped stretching my paper as I found the preliminary soaking changed
the surface in a way I didn't like. Unsoaked W&N has a surface that is
almost sensual- in the classical sense of the word. If it was cotton
material, one would say "it has a nice hand." The other two are
"harsher" to me.
That said, I think all are good papers and serve very well.
