I'd say the biggest problem with "old" paper is that if you have it,
you haven't been painting! Frankly, one can never have enough paper
lying around, in my opinion.
I agree with Pat, if its a good quality rag, you can let your
conservators worry about it. I have sketchbooks I did in sixth grade
(1972) that are still OK, so in this lifetime, I don't think I'd
worry about it.
If I have old half-used watercolor paper, I gesso it and use it for
oil paintings, so its never too late to use 'old' paper for me.
