I haven't found simple steel wool to be problematic though cleansers
of any kind are definitely not for me. I don't care for the residue.
I've had bad luck with Bon Ami and any detergents near my palettes.
If the buffing is done lightly with a fine steel wool or a fine sand
paper and rinsed well, I find there is no staining.
In my studio, I used a Richeson porcelain palette which I enjoy
thoroughly particularly with Sennelier or M. Graham paints—something
about how the honey works on that china palette is wonderful! Also
distilled water seems to work a clearer more luscious wash or glaze.
My friend in London uses an old plate which he carries around in a
laundry bag! Perhaps palettes are like cars–every painter has one,
and we each like our own for a very individual reason.
