Wow ! The list sure is burning with this one ! I've been following
the thread, and have scanned the 25 or so pages of comments on the Wet
Canvas site, and I must say that this story really touches me, Proof
or no proof, this painter has removed her web site and you can't find
images of her paintings anywhere on the web (aside from the Wet Canvas
discussion). If it were me, and if I had nothing to be ashamed of…
I work in a realistic style, and more often than not I work from
photos, as I take a looooooong time to complete a painting. However,
I work only from my own photos. Paint what you know, as the saying
goes, and when I take a picture, it's because I've seen something in a
particular scene that touches me. I almost feel that this particular
painter has somehow cheapened my own work. Maybe copyright laws don't
prevent her from combining two or more of someone else's images to
“create” a work of her own, but it somehow seems wrong to me.
In the future, am I going to have to include my reference photo with
show submissions so that the mistakes can be found and therefore prove
that it's really an original painting ?
