Let me add that among the many painters who seem to use such an approach, one that combines excellently the realistic ideas with the abstract qualities, using the wet in wet technique especially near the edges to define shapes is R. Karwoski. His book "Watercolor Bright and Beautiful" is one of the best I believe...
