Like Barty said, these companies are only the distributors. Holbein is made
in Japan and W/N is made in England Daniel Smith are from Seattle, but they
say their pigments come from around the world, M Graham is made in Oregon
and uses Blackberry Honey as its binder. Maimeri is an Italian company.
The Hopper family started distributing W/N when they were living in montreal
Then the Japanese talked the Hopper family to distribute Holbein and I can't
remember all the details of their story, but they moved to Vermont and
became the only distributors of Holbein at the time. Now there are 2
distributors and I think they said there may be another coming.
The reason Holbein paints don't dry to a hard rock is that they do not use
the ox gall filler that I was told is what they used to make the pigment
more transparent. They told me that back in time, tube watercolor were never
intended to be a medium that you would leave the paint in a tray/palette to
use again at another time. Watercolor you were suppose to squeeze out and
use then when you were done that was it, next time you would squeeze them
out again. Cakes were what you could use over and over but the technique of
watercolor was more of a tint back then, not how many use it these days,
which is a rich amount of vibrant pigment.
Again I'm not an expert, just what I hear
