Thanks Pat.  You are absolutely right and I always use at least a double
mat.  But I let the buyer choose the designer color for the top mat.
The auction in Portland, Maine,  was for art only at a Gallery and
included Andrew Wyeth and other living painters of Maine.  Frank Mason is
still the greatest legendery art figure in NYC, which is why his
watercolor was popular.  He is basically an oil painter, the very popular
champion of traditional classical realsim, and a beloved teacher at the
Arts Student League of three generations. You can see Marguerite Zorach's
work on line.  There are two of her watercolors in the Boston Museum of
Fine Art.
The top oil went for $215,000, one for $60,000 and one for $48,000.
