Quality of materials is essential, I agree, and always use all acid free
archival materials, and always outer white mats. The correct white (there
are dozens) is as important as choosing the correct color pigments for
your paintings. Just as we were discussing that oils are generally
considered of more lasting value I read the following in this weeks issue
of Antiques and Art, an extremely popular newspaper in America, known as
the "Antique B":
Headline - Munnings watercolor tops sale at $480,000.
People with a lot of money are investing in fine art which always seems
to increase in value. This auction was held in Portland , Maine at
Baridoff Galleries.
Munnings was an English artist but the following watercolors were also
listed as the top sellers of 250 paintings:
Frank Benson, "Wooster Farm, Northhaven, Maine" - $72,000 & "In Flight"-
$48,000
George Luks, "Upstream, Nova Scotia circa 1920" - $51,600
Marguerite Zorach, "Nevada Falls, Yosemite Valley, California" - $72,000
Alfred Jacob Miller, "Portrait of an Indian" - $60,000
The truth is "paintings are worth more after you die", but this auction
proves some galleries respect watercolors. Hurrah for the people in
Maine. Do any of you belong to Aquanet?
