Yes, what you call masking tape is exactly what I call masking tape.

 I think all of us have our own favorite ways to deal with paper. 
Despite all the recommendations in books, I do not soak my paper before 
I begin to paint. This is a result of painting for years with W&N paper 
and finding that I did not like what soaking did to the surface. As a 
consequence, when I am ready to paint, I tape down the edges of the 
paper, and then begin. If, as I usually do, I begin with wet-in-wet, I 
simply brush on water and let it sit long enough so that the surface 
reacts like I want it to. If I don't soak and re-soak, the masking tape 
holds okay.

Perhaps if I had started with Papier d'Arches or a similar "hard" paper, 
I would have done things differently.
