[Aquanet] On Yupo, two discoveries and a question

Hi Pat,
You can use Windex or alcohol and that will help remove the stains,
sometimes completely but not always.
Use a spray varnish such as Golden's Gloss Varnish to protect the Yupo.
It does take at least 3 coats and allow drying time of a couple of hours
between each coast. The first coast should be very light if you are using
watercolor to prevent disturbing the paint. I am still experimenting with
this and have had success painting a final coat of gloss medium giving the
painting a real protection. You have to use a really soft brush as I have
ruined paintings at this step and the paint has rubbed off even after the
three coats of varnish. It's a lot of time and work and unless you get that
final coat of gloss medium on I don't feel the painting is protected enough
because even the slightest scratch will take of the paint. One other thing,
use gloss sprays and medium and once that is done you can then spray a matte
or satin finish to knock down the gloss. If you use matte in the layering
you can then get a cloudy finish.
Let me know how you do,
Maureen

Subject: [Aquanet] On Yupo, two discoveries and a question

Greetings, oh busy, busy painters.

I've been trying Yupo again and I have made two discoveries- well, at
least discoveries to me: the first is that altho the publicity indicates
that Yupo can be washed/scrubbed back to white, I find a ghost of an
image remains that can mess up corrections or re-paintings; the second
discovery is that if one paints on Yupo with acrylics, the initial layer
acts much like watercolour in that you get weird textures; however, once
the paint is dry, subsequent layers go on as if on paper- as long as the
layers are over the dried acrylic.

Any chance of a Nobel prize in the arts for these discoveries?

My question is "Once one has painted the acrylics on the Yupo, can one
use an acrylic spray and then frame the painting as if it were acrylic
on canvas?"

not George, but still curious
pat
