My feeling about both Peter and Phyllis's works is that working from
photographs needs too much practice and knowledge of how that distorts
everything. When working from life you can only focus on a smaller
section and need to squint in order to simplify the pattern. The
Bangladesh scene is beautifully painted but the sharp triangles all
ending in one spot is unreal and confusing. Leading the eye so suddenly
to one spot makes it imperative that there is something in that spot that
is exciting.
Devon is well drawn but the value contrast and detail is sharpest in the
most distant house at the top. That brings it forward and makes it look
as if it is sitting on top of the others even though the size is smaller.
Aerial perspective makes distant objects less distinct. The linear
perspective is good, giving the feel of the curve in the mountain. I love
the boats in the harbor and the shadows their masts cast and just
concentrating on that section would make a great scene. Either the
photo cut off some space or you ran out of space for the boats. I would
really like to see more of the foreground water. Thank you both for
giving us the chance to see your efforts. You spur us all to work
harder.
