[Aquanet] Watercolour painting with no glass

Hi

You have to do your own research and tests. I spent 18 months searching and testing many products ways to do that kind. What I can tell you in the general principles that guided me.

I wanted to continue to paint on WC paper and the results are not the same with varnish because of of the paper's texture.

Varnishes meant for oil painting are not the same. The products I use have a UV protection, it stays flexible (paper is not rigid) , it does not yellow with time and it is reversible, I mean you can remove it.

One other feature I appreciate, it self-levels during application so the coat(s) dries more even.
One artist in the Quebec province, does no-glass watercolor paintings since 12 years and she has excellent results. The finished WC painting is marouflé on non acid back panel do it won't warp, you have to use flexible products because paper is not rigid, acid-free of course. You also have to protect parts of the frame .

We both made lots of consultations, including a museum director that has another diploma in bio-chemistry, so he undertands very well all the technical vocabulary provided with some products. Of course, he is more in favour of the classical presentation under glass but the innovation is very interesting.

The finition is longer to do than usual watercolor, so I will continue to do also "classical" presentation for juried societies shows. Here in Québec, people just start to know about WC. It is like trying to sell Japanese poetry books to people from Norway. People hate glass over artwork. They say that it looks like a reproduction. Most of my paintings are meant for Art Galleries, solo shows etc.

  Hi Peter and Lorraine
One problem is that most shows as far as I know do not accept this type of framing for watercolours. What do you say? Valerie Kent

Lorraine, This is interesting. Appreciate if you could provide some details, e.g. Any kind of paper? What type of varnish? How many coats? How do you attach the painting to the panel? Any problems? thanks, Peter Parker

      Dear Aquanetters

I made some paintings that are watercolour with no glass, these are painted
on wc paper but coated with special varnish products that are flexible, UV
protection. The wc is then marouflé ¯n a acid free panel then framed like an
oil painting. My husband (age 70) likes this new presentation, my daughter
(age 30) prefers the "classical" presentation with no varnish , with mats
and glass. I've done lots of research ( approx 18 months) and consultations
to find and experiment the right and long conservation term products.

      Comparing the two ways :

      1) No glass : I like the results but since it is a new way of looking at a
wc, some adaptation must be done on my part to get accustomed . Frames are
less expensive and you can make a bigger painting fit in the same frame
because marie-louise is more narrow. Exemple : in a former classical frame
      meant for 15 x 21 wc , you are able to fit almost a 18 x 24 inches.

      2) No glass : the finition takes much longer , so the less expensive cost
for framing is spent on my professional time to do the finition.

Conclusion : I will do both kinds of presentation.

Have a new wonderful year, full of enchanting colors and projects for 2008 !
