[Aquanet] web sites

Pat,

I do not qualify to advise as my site is not yet on the air and still at a
prototype stage, but I can share my tribulations. Like you I was looking for
a low insertion entry point (both technically and cost-wise) and after
having been wrongly advised to buy Namo Web Editor, cheap but that I found
cumbersome to use and quite inflexible, I search the web for freeware stuff.

Initially I considered NVU, but then turned to Kompozer, an "NVU's
unofficial bug fix release", that you can download at
http://www.kompozer.net/download.

I found a very clear, hands-on tutorial (How to Design and Publish Your
Website with KompoZer) by Christopher Heng at thesitewizard.com
<http://www.thesitewizard.com/>

Like NVU it is a wysiwyg editor that lets you play with the resulting HTML
code if you like (and probably will in my experience). I found essentially
no limitation as to achieving the functionalities and the look and feel I
wanted (but I did not try to implement fancy bells and whistles anyway).

A guy of the trade who looked at my site tells me the tool generates
un-necessary code, but I think this is true of all wysiwyg editors and it
does not bother me much. Also he advises me to use css files to separate
data from style information (the way data will appear on the page). And
there I am prepared to consider that more seriously, as using css is
especially important if you have multiple pages sharing the same style
(which I do). It makes maintenance easier, a change in the style sheet (css
file) applying to all pages calling the file and the addition/ change of
pages using the style also made simpler. But I must say I did not
investigate on how to do that using Kompozer (the tool is supposed to
support css) and I am still pondering whether I should just complete the
current version and let it fly as is or make the move to css first.

If members of the list have gone through a similar experience, I'd sure be
glad to hear about their findings too!

Regards,

Gilles

Hi, gang.

It's me again*, el cheapo Patrick.

What I'd like to know is if any of you have done your own web pages

using any of the free HTML editors, esp a 'wysiwyg' editor. I'm thinking

of doing a simple web page since I have one included in my ISP

subscription. At the same time I don't want to spend a lot of (Okay,

ANY) money since mainly I just want to play around with this.

If any of you are/were in the same boat, please let me know.

TIA for sure

pat

* Okay, I know that if my English was really "propah" I'd write, "It is

I" but I'm contrary. :-)
