If you're adhering archival watercolor papers, all you need to do is make sure your adhesive is pH neutral. In Creative College Techniques we recommend acrylic mediums and gels. The heavier the paper, the heavier the medium. We don't recommend thinning the mediums, although some artists do.
When incorporating items that aren't acid-free, you should encase (coat) the objects or papers completely with medium to seal them so they won't degrade the surface they're applied to. It's a good idea to also encase the support or surface you adhere the materials to. Brush a thin coat of fluid acrylic medium on both sides so the surface will remain flat.
With care, collages can be made to last a very long time, but there is no way to making a general statement about longevity because of the variations in materials and surfaces that are used. The operative word is "acid-free," which means pH neutral. For best results put on a final coat of medium and frame under a mat or with mat spacers under glass.

Subject: [Aquanet] watercolor collage
A recent post, had a link to Sheila Sondik's website where there are some beautiful collages. How do conservation/archival prepared collages hold up over time? What are the conservation and archival issues with collages? What specific materials should one consider to attach watercolor paper to watercolor paper with the goal of the the art being permanent?
Thanks, James Gross
